Centrifugal Pumps

Centrifugal pumps are commonly used to move fluids by transferring rotational energy from one or more driven rotors. The fluid will enter the rotating impellers before being removed by centrifugal force. These mechanical pumps have many applications, whether as agricultural or industrial centrifugal pumps. Safely move a range of fluids with a centrifugal pump from Kingfisher Direct.

Centrifugal pumps operate by utilising a rotating impeller immersed in a liquid. As the impeller spins, it adds kinetic energy to the fluid, causing it to flow outward due to centrifugal force, which increases fluid pressure.

Critical components of a centrifugal pump include:

  • Casing: A sealed chamber surrounding the impeller and directing the liquid flow.
  • Impeller: A rotating part with blades or vanes that imparts kinetic energy to the fluid.
  • Shaft: A rotating rod that connects the impeller to the motor and transmits power.
  • Bearings: Components that allow the shaft to rotate smoothly within the pump.
  • Seal: A device used to prevent leakage between the rotating and stationary parts of the pump.

Three main factors characterise the performance of a centrifugal pump:

  • Flow rate: The volume of liquid moved by the pump per unit time, typically shown in gallons per minute (GPM) or cubic metres per hour (m3/hr).
  • Head: The pressure difference created by the pump, usually measured in feet of liquid or metres of liquid.
  • Efficiency: A measure of the pump's ability to convert input into useful output power, usually shown as a percentage.

Centrifugal pumps offer versatility, energy efficiency, ease of maintenance, and fantastic performance.
