Don’t bin that plastic bottle, bottle it

Single use plastic bottles are steadily becoming a big issue in the UK, and across the globe. In 2019, the UK threw away 8 million drink containers, which included plastic bottles, into general waste – these end up in landfill sites and are not usually biodegradable, taking up space for several years.

If disposed of in the right way, our environment will benefit enormously, both in the short and long term.

Benefits of recycling water bottles

Lower amount of waste

When single use plastic bottles are disposed of with general waste, they are near impossible to biodegrade. By recycling plastic bottles, you are ensuring that they don’t end up in landfill.

Single use plastic bottles in landfill sites can’t biodegrade. By recycling plastic bottles, they won’t take up as much space in landfill sites and there will be less need for sites across the UK.

Recycling plastic bottles also ensures that they don’t end up in our oceans - injuring fish, birds and other marine animals. This has a devastating effect on the entire ocean ecosystem.

Lower greenhouse gas emissions

When manufacturing plastics, lots of carbon dioxide is released into our atmosphere, which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. When plastic bottles are recycled, the process of the recycling uses fewer fossil fuels and reduces carbon emissions.

Uses less resources

Recycling, instead of throwing away plastic water bottles, uses less natural resources, like oil, which is in limited supply. This is truly one of the best benefits of recycling water bottles. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency says that for every tonne of plastic recycled, we save nearly 3.8 barrels of crude oil.

Create jobs in your community

By recycling, you create the need for recycling plants where people are needed to staff the machines or sort the recycling.

The Green Alliance, an independent charity, says its research shows that driving ‘circular economy’ in the UK could create more than 300,000 new jobs in remanufacturing and 30,000 in repair work within the next 15 years.

Plastic packaging tax

The plastic packaging tax (PPT) came into effect on April 1st.

The PPT is payable by manufacturers and importers of plastic packaging containing less than 30% recycled plastic content. The rate will be £200 per metric tonne where certain thresholds are met.

The objective of PPT, according to HM Revenue & Customs is to: “provide a clear economic incentive for businesses to use recycled plastic material in plastic packaging”. Their hope is that this will create demand for recycled materials and increase levels of recycling, reducing the need for landfills.
