A buyer's guide to water bowsers

A water bowser offers a reliable and safe option for storing and transporting water. These are often mobile objects that can be towed along by a vehicle.
In situations where a natural water supply isn’t available, water bowsers provide clean water.

The different types of water bowsers

We have a wide range of water bowsers. Each serves a different role based on its design and features.

Static bowsers

A static bowser doesn’t move and doesn't have wheels like our other bowsers. These are commonly used on construction sites and in welfare blocks providing clean water for taps.

Site towable bowsers

These are designed to be moved across a site. The durable design ensures it can manage the heavy demand of site work. These don’t have suspension or lights like the highway towable bowsers.

Highway towable bowsers

These are designed to be towed by a vehicle and function as a great way of transporting water from A to B. Their brake system makes them road legal as if it detaches from the vehicle the brake system will bring the bowser to a halt. Another highway feature is the indicators that are built into the chassis.

For a highway towable bowser, both the driver’s licence and the towing abilities of the vehicle must also meet the legal requirements for the bowser. These requirements can be found on the government website.

Where are they commonly found?

Water bowsers can be found in various settings as they are versatile.

Events

Many events such as festivals struggle due to the lack of water supply at their location. The way they resolve this is by using water bowsers to provide drinking water, tap water and even shower water for camping events.

Farms

Like the above, in some remote farmlands, a natural water supply can be hard to come by. Water bowsers offer an ideal solution to water storage for animals to drink from.
We offer water bowsers that are designed for such situations. The 1125 Litres Water Site Bowser with Small Animal Trough has a trough for the animals to drink from and is easily moveable across various terrain with its large wheels.

Construction sites

As mentioned before, construction sites commonly use static water bowsers that will stay in one place throughout the time work is being done. On a construction site, a water bowser can be used to provide drinking water, to wash hands or even to aid with the work.

Construction sites experience a high level of dust due to the work that takes place. Water bowsers are often used as a dust suppression tool. The construction site will also need something to spray vapour into the air. This collects the dust and then lands back on the ground rather the being released into the air.

What are the rules about driving a water bowser on the road?

If you are going to drive a water bowser on the road, you first need to ensure that it is highway legal. This will be identified in either the product's name or description. If you can’t see if the water bowser is highway legal, you will need to contact the manufacturer to ensure it is highway legal.

As we mentioned further up in this piece, both the driver’s licence and the towing abilities of the vehicle must also meet the legal requirements for the bowser.

The driver will also need to check their eligibility based on their driving licence:

Licences issued from 1 January 1997

If you passed your car driving test on or after 1 January 1997, you can:

  • drive a car or van up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass (MAM) towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM.
  • tow a trailer over 750kg MAM if the combined MAM of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg.

Licences issued before 1 January 1997

You are allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg MAM.
